Ruckr’s Quarterly Rucking Gear Guide: How to Progress Without Buckling Under the Weight of Your Pack

As you probably know by now, because we talk about it so much in this newsletter (for good reason), rucking is one of the most effective, accessible, and rewarding forms of exercise. Whether you’re just starting or looking to take your training to the next level, having the right gear can make a significant difference in your comfort and progress. As you progress, your rucking equipment should match your fitness level and goals. This quarterly gear guide will help you select the best gear, from rucksacks to weighted vests and hydration packs, without getting overwhelmed by the weight.

Rucksacks for Every Fitness Level

Choosing the right rucksack is essential for ensuring comfort, durability, and safety during your rucks. Here are the best options for each fitness level:

Beginner

The 5.11 Tactical RUSH 12 is a popular choice for beginners due to its size, durability, and affordability. It offers 24 liters of storage, enough for basic weight without overloading your back. The pack has adjustable shoulder straps and sturdy construction, making it a great entry-level option. Its compact size is ideal for shorter distances and lighter loads, allowing beginners to ease into rucking without straining their bodies.

For those who prefer a smaller, lighter option, the GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 is an excellent choice. It’s durable, comfortable, and built for shorter rucks or carrying lighter weights. This sleek, no-frills pack does exactly what it says it does: it carries a ruck plate. It’s easy to manage and perfect for those just getting into the habit of rucking without the burden of extra bulk.

Intermediate

As you progress, the GORUCK GR1 is the go-to rucksack for intermediate ruckers. It offers 21 to 26 liters of storage space, providing ample room for heavier weights and longer rucking sessions. Made with military-grade materials, it’s designed to withstand extreme conditions, making it a durable and reliable option for those rucking 5-10 miles. The GR1’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable fit for longer rucks and heavier loads, while the padded straps help minimize strain on your shoulders.

Another excellent option for intermediate ruckers is the Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 20. This 20-liter pack is versatile, with ample space for carrying weights and other essentials like hydration packs or extra gear. Its adjustable yoke and padded shoulder straps provide enhanced comfort, making it ideal for ruckers looking to increase their load and distance without compromising on support.

Advanced

For advanced ruckers, or really just about anyone who plans to ruck as part of their regular (mind and body) exercise routine for the rest of their lives, the GORUCK Rucker 4.0 is the ultimate choice. Designed specifically for rucking, this pack is built to carry heavier weights over long distances. With reinforced handles, durable materials, and specially designed weight compartments, the Rucker 4.0 can handle anything you throw at it. This rucksack is perfect for serious ruckers participating in challenges, GORUCK events, or those who want to carry over 30 pounds comfortably. After using a decent daypack loaded with 20 lbs of castiron weights for about 6-months, which started to come apart at the seams, I moved to the GORUCK Rucker 4.0 and never looked back.

Another top option for advanced ruckers is the 5.11 Tactical Backpack, Rush 24 2.0. With its 37-liter capacity, this pack offers ample space for carrying heavy loads, additional gear, and hydration systems. The rugged design and adjustable straps ensure that even with a full load, the pack remains stable and comfortable on long, demanding rucks. Plus…this is one of the only packs that we’ve ever seen with 900+ 5-star reviews.

Weighted Vests and Ruck Plates

Weighted vests and plates can be great additions to your rucking gear, adding versatility to your training while allowing you to vary your load without the need for a bulky pack.

The Hyperwear Hyper Vest is an excellent option for ruckers who want to add resistance training to their workouts. It’s designed to fit snugly to the body, distributing weight evenly without bouncing or shifting. This vest is great for intermediate to advanced ruckers looking to increase intensity without compromising on movement or comfort.

For those who want a more tactical look and feel, the WOLF TACTICAL Adjustable Weighted Vest is another great option. Though it’s compatible with standard ruck plates, WOLF TACTICAL also designs its own plates in pairs (one for the front, and one for the back) that are designed to fit comfortably in this awesome vest. This vest is ideal for ruckers looking to combine bodyweight exercises like push-ups or squats with their ruck, offering a more versatile training experience.

Ruck Plates

Specifically designed for rucking, GORUCK Ruck Plates are compact, durable, and fit seamlessly into GORUCK packs. Available in a variety of weights (10-45 lbs), they allow for easy customization based on your training goals. The plates are built to fit securely in your rucksack, minimizing movement during your ruck.

For lots of different and cost-effective options, Yes4All Cast Iron Ruck Plates are a solid choice. These plates are easy to use in all kinds of rucksacks or plate carriers and are ideal for adding extra weight to your training. Available in various weight options, they are versatile and durable. We’ve purchased several of these over the years and have found them to be bulletproof! Just make sure you find and purchase ones that will fit your rucksack or vest. Yes4All carries all varieties.

Hydration Packs

Staying hydrated is essential for rucking, especially during long or intense sessions. Just remember, every liter of water adds 2.2 lbs to your rucksack! Here are the best hydration packs for ruckers:

The HydraPak Velocity IT Bladder is a lightweight, flexible, insulated hydration system that fits easily into most rucksacks. It holds 1.5-2 liters of water and features a wide opening for easy filling and cleaning. This unique design allows the bladder to collapse as you drink, minimizing sloshing and maximizing comfort.

Another excellent hydration option is the CamelBak Crux Hydration Bladder. Known for its durability and ease of use, the Crux holds up to 3 liters of water and features a large bite valve for efficient hydration. Its slim design makes it a great fit for both beginner and advanced rucksacks.

Why these, why now?

Progressing in rucking requires the right gear to match your fitness level. From beginner-friendly rucksacks like the 5.11 Tactical RUSH12 to advanced packs like the GORUCK Rucker 4.0, having the appropriate equipment can enhance your performance and comfort. Don’t forget to invest in weighted vests, plates, and hydration systems to take your rucking to the next level, ensuring you progress without buckling under the weight.

Tip of the week

Hydrate like you’re prepping for a desert trek. Water is your new best friend, don’t ghost it.
